Academy jazz and classical players collaborate to trace a line from Dowland’s late-night, bluesy melancholy to Shostakovich’s penetratingly dark and virtuosic Piano Quintet.

Yan Pascal Tortelier is Conductor Emeritus of the BBC Philharmonic and Guest Conductor of Honour at the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra. He makes a welcome return to the Academy to conduct a programme of colourful orchestral masterpieces, including Messiaen’s mystical religious triptych ‘The Forgotten Offerings’, Ravel’s rustic Spanish Rhapsody and Rimsky-Korsakov’s dazzling Scheherazade.  Yan Pascal Tortelier is Conductor Emeritus of the BBC Philharmonic and Principal Conductor of the Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra. He makes a welcome return to the Academy in his capacity as Principal Guest Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra in a concert of orchestral repertoire spanning over 150 years: from Schumann’s Third Symphony to a new work commissioned for this evening’s performance.

The Encounter of Music and Academy will gather in Santander renowned maestros of each instrument and outstanding young European musicians. Throughout a month professors and students will be working in the classroom and will share the stage. It is a great musical fiesta that will open with the Encounter’s Orchestra, followed by 60 concerts throughout the region of Cantabria. There will also be solo recitals, although ensemble music will prevail - either chamber or orchestral music.

Ashbourne Summer Music Series: August 16th to September 06th, 2009.

The series consists of four Sunday evening concerts in August/September.

The first concert on Sunday 16th August sees young Spanish violinist, Nicole Crespo O’Donoghue play a virtuoso programme of violin masterpieces,  ranging from works by Falla, Sarasate and Wieniawski to the well-loved Londonderry Air in a beautiful arrangement by Kreisler.

Nicole has been coming to Ashbourne every summer for years and embarks on a professional performance degree in London this autumn.

Having won every major violin prize competition in her native country, this is Nicole’s first recital in Ireland.

Ashbourne Summer Music Series : August 16th to September 06th.

“Ashbourne Summer Music Series” is a series of concerts featuring young professional musicians and hosted by Ashbourne Church Choir in celebration of their 30 years in the parish. The four August/September concerts (two remaining at the time of posting this blog) are as follows;

  1. August 16th: Violinist, Nicole Crespo O’ Donoghue (Spain).
  2. August 23rd: Dublin Brass Ensemble
  3. August 30th: Organist, Peter McBride (Ashbourne).
  4. September 06th: Stylus Vocal Ensemble (accompanied by Ashbourne Church Choir).
Events take place in Ashbourne Church at 8PM and tickets cost €10 (€8 concession) so get out and support the events!
