Recorded during Covid-19(Recorded prior to Tier 4 Restrictions) The Story behind ´Silent Night - Christmas CarolHow, historically and internationally the hymn we all know so well was sung on the battlefield during World War I #WWI, when, during a temporary truce on Christmas Eve, soldiers sang carols from home. "Silent Night," by 1914, known around the world, was sung simultaneously in #French, #German and #English. And now during the Covid-19 epidemic which the whole world has succumbed to its effects the ringing sounds of songs and hymns like Silent Night is so much needed and remembered. The composition has been translated into over 300 languages with many different arrangements for various voices and ensembles. It was Christmas Eve, 1818, when the now-famous carol ´Silent Night´, performed in St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf in the Austrian village not long after the #Napoleonic wars had taken their toll. Joseph Mohr, the young priest who wrote the lyrics, played the guitar and sang along with Franz Xaver Gruber, the choir director who had written the melody.
